Black Women Mean Business – Chastity Garner Valentine

Plus-size fashion has taken center stage.  The fashion world has often bypassed and overlooked the fact that women’s body shapes and types were not all the same. Many women found themselves being disappointed during trips to the mall and local stores to buy a cute outfit only to find out that it was not in their size.  As 2010 was approaching, the push for recognition would come to a head with the help of a fashion influencer from Atlanta.

At the helm of this movement is the creator of GarnerStyle, Chastity Garner Valentine.  Formerly known as The Curvy Girl’s Guide to Style, GarnerStyle is a blog that coincided with Chastity’s image consulting business. Her overall goal was to provide inspiration and advice to plus-size women looking to bring some positive changes to their wardrobe. She has been able to achieve this by sharing her favorite coordinated styles and exposing her life’s journey to many online.

The latest blog post, titled #PullUporShutUp: Plus Size Brands That Are Supporting Black Lives Matter, highlights the importance of understanding what true allyship to the Black community would look like as a national brand without feeling the pressure to be politically outspoken. With the current state of the nation, quarantine craze is REAL! Chastity takes readers on a journey of finding stylish outfits while social distancing and saving money.

Since 2008, GarnerStyle has positioned itself as a major advocate for plus-size fashion, health, and emotional wellness. And to top this off, Chastity is also a popular disc jockey under the moniker DJ Chaz.  She is a co-founder of The Curvy Con – an event that aims to celebrate the beauty of a plus-size woman both inside and out and powered by Dia and Co.

Through social media, they encourage curvy women to challenge the norms that society continues to uphold.  “Be fearless. You only live once, why not look fabulous while doing it,” says the influencer. “If nothing else, don’t let size dictate your style.”
